0666   NUTRITION AND FOOD ADVANCED 31 (SPECIALTY FOODS)

Semester, 1 credit

Prerequisite: Nutrition and Food Advanced 21

 

This laboratory course emphasizes the planning and preparation of meals that includes dishes from various regions of our country and from other countries.  The course is designed to broaden the student’s interest and knowledge and is recommended for students with strong interest and advanced skills.  Other features of the course include the study of different styles of meal service and the serving of food for special occasions.  The two major projects are catering (the Soup Project) and cake decorating. Students should have a “C” average in previous foods classes.  There will be a lab fee charged for this class.

This is a consumer education course.The class provides the information needed for adulthood in our ever-changing society.The focus is on becoming an independent, contributing and responsible member of our community.Topics include:(1) living independently and as a family, (2) values, goals, choices, (3) consumer rights and responsibilities, (4) nutrition and wellness, (5) clothing, (6) housing,

(7) budgeting and credit, (8) career exploration and employment skills,(9) insurance, (10) buying and maintaining a car, (11) environment and citizenship education and (12) using technology – hands on computer experiences, case studies, guest speakers, and

videos.Students will produce a commercial, complete a check writing activity and write a résumé.
