1927   MUSIC THEORY AND COMPOSITION LEVEL 2

Semester, 1 credit

Prerequisite:  Completion of Music Theory and Composition, and instructor permission

 

Music Theory and Composition Level 2 is a course designed to allow Music students the opportunity to explore more advanced elements of music theory, analysis and composition.  They will review components of basic music notation and writing skills that are covered in the first Music Theory class before advancing on to more complex analysis skills and structural components.

 

The students will cover all triads, 7th chords, chord progressions, non-harmonic tones, and recognition of form structures such as simple one part, two part, and four part song form.

 

Writing and composition skills will continue with melody writing, harmonizing of simple melodies, arranging for small ensembles in various styles, and arranging for full concert band.

 

Students will transcribe music from an audio tape into written form to improve their listening and comprehension skills.  Students will compose a work of their own for concert band as a final project for the class. As well as take a final written exam on skills information and skills learned throughout the course.
