    1. We watched approximately 20 minutes more of the movie "Gorillas in the Mist"

    Students were to answer the following two questions on their bell questions based on the video

    Why do African poachers kill and take gorillas?  What is your opinion of animal conservation?  Why?  What are the costs and benefits?

    - We read through pages 521 and 522 in class and discussed the mulitple cultural histories of this area.  We then dicussed the Swahili language (see attached).  We did NOT do the sharades activity because we didn't have time. Finally, we listened to reggae music. (see website attached)

     - Bell Question - page 529 - What are problems being faced by Kenya because of the expanding population? Why might educating women be the key to solving population problems?

    AFRICA ONLINE ACTIVTY WAS COLLECTED

    We then briefly covered the Gorilla poaching PowerPoint to finish our discussion of "Gorillas in the Mist" (see attached)

    Next, we took notes on African diseases - (see attached diseases note sheet and disease PowerPoint).

    Finally, a homework assignment on Rwanda/Darfur was handed out.  THIS WILL BE DUE THURSDAY FEBRUARY 10th. --- (see attached)

    Wednesday February 9th

    1. Bell Questions ----- From Attached Aids Reading     Why is Aids a mostly rural issue?  What is levirate?  Why is Aids a big problem with Women?

    2. We went over the disease notes and added a video clip on Aids in Africa.

    3. We read the Issues and Challenges on page 527-8, then started watching "Hotel Rwanda"

    Thursday February 10th

    1. Bell Questions - From watching the video

    - How did the UN react to the genocide in Rwanda? - Why? Should countries get involved in tragedies/conflicts in foreign countries? - Explain Costs/Benefits

    2. We watched the next 40 Minutes of the movie "Hotel Rwanda"

    1. Bell Questions - page 536 - What is biodiversity?  Why is there so much biodiversity in Madagascar?  What are ways to maintain this biodiversity?

    2. We discussed the situations in Rwanda, Darfur and Somalia --- see attached PowerPoint

    3. We started chapter 24 - discussing the physical geography - See Chapter 24.1 and the map questions on pages 472-7 - focus on Southern Africa

    Monday February 14th

    1. Bell Questions - page 537-8 - Who were the first South Africans to raise crops?  Why did the first Europeans come there?  Why didn't they travel inland?

    2. We then discussed early South African history, then worked on a timeline. This timeline should be written in the study guide's third page. Read pages 537-9 to write down the points on the timeline.

    3. Apartheid PowerPoint - This was used to show examples of South African Apartheid and its relationship to segregation in the United States. ---- SEE ATTACHED

    2. France PowerPoint - We took notes on key events, history, architecture, problems and culture of France. ----- see attached

    3. Taste of France - We tried French cheeses including brie and camembert on crackers (to simulate French Bread) and tried NON-alcoholic sparkling grape juice (to simulate French Champagne).  NO, I am NOT promoting alcoholic consumption!  However, you cannot have an honest discussion of French cuisine without discussing French wines.  It was only a simulation not a promotion!

    Mr. Moore spent $40 of his own money on this food soooo thank him again tomorrow!  If you weren't here...you missed out!

    Click on the Europe Extra Credit quiz attached.  This quiz contains 20 random question from chapters 13 and 14.  You have up to 3 chances to get above a 90% on this assignment.  Once you get above a 90% you have earned your extra credit.  You may use any sources at your disposal to answer the questions including your book, your notes, the internet.  Answer carefully because the questions and answers chance with each time you take the quiz. You have until Tuesday March 8th at midnight to complete this extra credit quiz!  Good luck!

    3. Next we took a quiz off of the "Physical geography chart"  then the chart and the quiz were stapled together and turned in.

    4. Finally we watch a quick video clip on "Hot Spots" and did a quick demonstration about the Continental Divide

    To watch video clip type in discoveryeducation.com   type in HBOWERS for the username and 888888 as the password.  Then search for Natural Wonders: geysers, volcanoes and hot spots...watch the clips under hot spots and volcanoes.

"Apocalypto" - A 12 minute scene from this movie was show to depict life during the downfall of the Mayan civilization and to show cityscape during this time period. The scene also lead up to what it was like to be one who was brought to the temples to be sacrificed to the Mayan gods.  The sacrifice scene was not shown however, because of the graphic violence that was deemed unnecessary.
