Popcorn Words

Popcorn words are words that pop up everywhere.  We add one or two words a week to our word wall.  Each time we add a word to the wall we take a close look at it.  We notice things such as how many letters it has in it, we cheer it and clap it or move to it.  There are many ways to cheer and clap the word, but here are a few of our favorites:

Cheers( different voices)   Claps:  Movements:
Whisper cheer (voice) Clam clap Raise the roof
Papa Bear voice  Ketchup clap Bat the ball
Opera voice  Golf clap Roller Coaster
Cheerleader cheer  Parrot Clap  Hoop it up

We play a lot of word games during center time.  Here are a few of our favorites:

*Word Hopscotch *Word Memory
*Word Bingo *Word Go Fish

*Boom – Played like a flash card game.  In the stack of words there are 5 “boom” cards.  If a player draws a word card he/she reads it.  If he/she draws a boom card he/she must put their cards back.

*Find the Word.  On shapes to match our themes I write the popcorn words.  We spread them out on the floor.  I give clues such as: “I’m looking for a word with 3 letters…there is an a in the middle of the word…it starts like cat.”  Students enjoy giving the clues also.

*Erase the word -  I write words on the dry erase board.  I say a word and the student erases it.

*Fish for words – With a magnetic fishing pole students catch fish with words on them.

*Word Beach Ball – Write words on beach ball.  Toss to students.  They say the word that is touching their thumb.

*Draw a stick -  Write words on craft sticks.  You can play like “Boom.”

*Read Like A Millionaire – Students take turns reading a word from the popcorn word deck.  If they need help on a word, they may phone a friend using a play telephone.

I borrowed all of these ideas from other web sites and/or books and Cindy's website.  Thanks to all who share!!
